|This pattern is
carved on a basswood 10" scalloped rim plate. The strong geometric design is derived
from deep cuts and sharp ridges. It has a dynamic visual energy created by contrasting
elements within the whole.
Starting with the rosette, the eye is drawn first to its strong, straight-line movement outward. This is counteracted by the circular movement of the swirl in the center of the rosette.
The border, with its circular, interlocking motif also is in contrast to the outward movement of the rosette. Interlocking patterns of this nature have a woven appearance and work well for borders. Opposing design elements of this nature always give definition to each other and make the over-all carving more interesting.
